Café, a friend of mine asked me who my favourite comic-book character was. More
precisely, he asked me which character I most identified with. I gave him three
names : Wolverine, Batman and Daredevil (I had a Visionaries TPB by Frank
Miller in my bag and quickly showed him some pages). The berserker mutant is
more related to my teenager years, when I believe I was unbreakable and also
had some bad temper. So in the rest of this essay, I'll only talk about
Daredevil and Batman. Creatures of the night. Angel of terror and devil without
fear. Comparing the two will give me the occasion to explore the richness of
their fictional universe.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

Sean Phillips and Alex Maleev.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 10pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">The young Bruce Wayne attended the murder of his
parents assaulted at the exit of the movie theatre. He swore to avenge their
death. He travelled the world and honed his skills to become the world's
greatest fighter and detective. Heir of the <st1:city w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Wayne</st1:place></st1:city>'s' fortune, he devoted his life to
fight a never-ending war on crime. He adopted a scary symbol to become an urban
legend and to strike terror in the heart criminals.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 10pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">The young Matt Murdock became blind by saving a man
who was going to be run over by a truck transporting radioactive waste.
Following the accident, his other senses were highly developed. A Master ninja
taught him how to control them. His father, a lowlife boxer, was killed after
having refused to lose a fight. Matt avenged his father and started his double
career of lawyer and vigilante.</span><br />
<br />
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 10pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">When you try to summarize these two stories, you can
realize that the origins of DD are more complex. Sure, for Batman, you could
add a fall in a cave during his childhood and the phobia of bats that resulted.
This phobia will be overcome so that Batman can be the one who incarnates
terror for the criminals, a terror which he himself knew and controlled. The
movie Batman Begins treats this topic very well. But in my opinion, that's
simply a variation on the classic schema: trauma, grief then resilience.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 10pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Daredevil follows a similar but more chaotic schema.
His history is even more tainted by loss and irony. Indeed, raised by his
single father (lost Mother), he had to promise not to fight at school against
the other kids who insulted and mocked him (they gave him the sarcastic
nickname of "Daredevil").</span><br />

parents, is opposed the promise of non-violence reluctantly made by Matt to a
father that he respected… and feared. The only time Matt hit back, he got
punished by his father. Short running away and birth of a vocation: his father
did not have the right to do that, neither did the other kids and if you cannot
use your fists, which weapons can you use? The law (a very "American"

<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 10pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Then the accident comes. Lost sight. Darkness and a
chaos of feelings. Then his mother at the hospital visited him. Wasn't his
mother supposed to be dead? In fact, she had become a nun. He made her a new
promise, to get beyond pain, to get stronger. Then the tough training with his
master : Stick. Not much place for fantasy. Not much time for the chitchat and
the confidences. Lost childhood?<o:p></o:p></span></div>

this succession of injustices, frustrations, losses, reluctantly made
promises... Because of all that, I find DD much more complex and touching than
Batman and I can't help thinking that this stuff was badly exploited in the
Daredevil movie. Because in spite of all these losses, the character will not
turned sour, cynical or whiny: he will persevere, fight, rise for what he
believes right, to make something good of his life.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

and paradoxes.To put it simply: justice, love, angels and demons are more
"universal" than a bat. And although both are evolving in dark
worlds, DD is carrying more hope. Batman it is the dark creature of the night,
a kind of Bogeyman. DD is the red spot, the flame that shines in the night, the

<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 10pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Fanboys often claim that Batman is cool because he
doesn't have any powers, so that you could relate to him more easily. This is
technically true but "plot-wisely" false. The authors describe Batman
like the best in nearly everything (criminology, martial arts, chemistry), he's
always engaging a fight with fifteen contingency plans, he has a solution for
everything, he is wary even of his allies on which he has files... One of the
caricatures of Batman is the Midnighter in Authority: the guy who cannot lose a
fight because he's already played and controlled a million of scenarios before
the first second. Nobody could be Batman. It is the prototype of the physical
and intellectual perfection (a scary Nietzschean "über-mensch")<o:p></o:p></span></div>

sense. He has also skills and talents: acrobat, martial artist, ninja... But he
is not "super", simply way above the average man. So again, in this
field, I find DD more touching. Batman is too good in everything. Nothing can
really happen to him. If it is the case, you get the impression of
mischaracterization, like the writer did not write the character as the
"real" Batman. DD is vulnerable to a lot of things, sometimes he
doubts, sometimes he fails but he never gives up. That's his super-power, a
power we can all have, or, at least, that can inspire us all.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 10pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Batman is disguised as Bruce Wayne. His true life, his
ultimate goal, is his war on crime. Bruce Wayne is just a facade. Matt Murdock
is a lawyer and sometimes disguises himself in Daredevil. He really leads two
lives that complete each other. He needs to work inside the legal system, to
prove himself rules can work but he also needs to run on roofs, to watch the
dark alleys and transform his anger and his childish frustrations into
something more positive. DD believes in two conceptions of justice which are
opposed and which he tries to reconcile. He is in precarious balance (that's
why his series is full of "Falls from Grace").<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 10pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Bruce Wayne's relationships with women are often
simply posturing. Bruce Wayne is a playboy, Batman only has female foes or
associates, not much "Bat-love" around. Catwoman ? A thief to catch
and maybe rehabilitate. Talia ? the daughter of the enemy, to neutralize or
convert into an ally. Wonder-Woman ? Unreachable, to flirt with and piss-off <st1:place w:st="on">Clark</st1:place>. Zatanna ? Silver <st1:city w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">St Cloud</st1:place></st1:city> ? Others ? Way too often switchable in
the role of the damsel in distress.</span><br />

<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 10pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">The writers of DD played with the heart of Matt
Murdock in some more diverse and, to me, interesting ways. Elektra: the first
love, the ninja who turned bad, the soul sister and the negative reflection, Karen
Page: the One, the beloved, the betrayer. Secretary, pornstar, junkie, radio
animator. Matt couldn't help falling in love with her. The Black Widow:
"the ex", the playmate, the good friend ("I am happy when you
are happy...") Heather Glenn: the jet-set-girl, could lighten up the
social life of Matt but couldn't fit in the other side of his life. Glorianna
O'Brien: redhead Irish photographer who never succeeded in shooting Matt's real
portrait. Milla Donovan<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>: a marriage
decided too quickly then annulled with a woman crazy about Matt who ended
totally nuts. Dakota North : the guilty affair, for a fearless but not
remorseless man. Kirsten McDuffie : some say she's the ideal GF for DD. I'm
more on the fence but have to admit she's like no other.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

much richer than DD's. Each villain is carrying a
particular symbolic system that makes him original and attaching (the bad guys
that we love to hate or feel sorry for) From the Joker, the Killing clown to
Rha's Al Ghul, the megalomaniac, including Two-Face, former DA obsessed with
duality; the Riddler, Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn, Scarecrow, Mister Freeze,
Man-Bat, Killer Croc, Bane, Black Mask, Penguin, the Mad Hatter : as many faces
of madness and monstruosity.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 10pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">In regard of this long, yet non-exhaustive list, DD's
Rogues can't quite keep up. There are a lot of minor villains as the Jester,
the Owl, Mister Hyde and Cobra, the Gladiator, often eclipsed by the main
nemesis that are the Kingpin and Bullseye So DD has a smaller rogue gallery but
consequently, the duels are often more "personal", and as physical
than moral/psychological. Like in the Typhoid Mary arc written by Ann Nocenti
or the Mister Fear arc by Ed Brubaker. Daredevil also has quite <a href="http://redshaker.blogspot.fr/2009/05/hornhead-skullchest-conclusion.html" target="_blank">a special relationship with the Punisher</a>.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: center;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 10pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">… but Batman has the craziest and scariest villains
while DD's Rogue Gallery is dominated by a few major adversaries – Illustrations
by Tom Kelly and Dustin Nguyen<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<h4 class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
Supporting cast :<o:p></o:p></h4>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 10pt;"><o:p></o:p></span><span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 10pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">On one side, there is Alfred and all the Bat-family
and on the other side: Foggy, Ben Urich and Murdock's women.While I find Alfred
essential (he is the local "Bernardo" to Zorro-Batman) the rest of
the Bat-family has me torn: they are cool but Batman is a loner. How could the
World's finest seek to be surrounded of other simple humans, weak and flawed ?
Moreover, does Bruce consider them as a true family and not pawns or soldiers ?
In DKR, when the Dark Knight catches up Carrie Kelley from falling, his thought
is : "Good soldier".<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 10pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">But I almost forgot commissioner Gordon, Batman's most
valued ally inside the GCPD and an important character in the Bat-Mythos as
seen in DKR or Batman : Year One.</span><span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 10pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;"><o:p> </o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 10pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Matt has Foggy : the law school comrade, the good pal,
the sidekick of the legal team. But authors gradually changed him into a
competent associate and a confidant. Ben Urich is also a stereotype: the
curious journalist who discovers the secret identity but who does not reveal
it. However, he has had some very good character moments (Born Again, anyone ?)
and moving storylines (DD 182 : Promises by Alan Brennet and Klaus Janson). The
supporting-cast of Batman is typically in a spandex style while DD's cast leans
towards soap-opera or sitcom.</span><br />

<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 10pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Having reviewed their similarities and their
differences, that will be no surprise if I tell you that, nowadays, I prefer
Daredevil to Batman. Even if I sometimes daydream of Batman's omnipotence (sorry,
that's got to be my inner child), I feel closer to Daredevil/Matt Murdock. You
can make it through life even with handicaps. You can find love, even after
many badly ending love-stories (well, in DD's case, that only works if a writer
is willing to give him a break). You can enjoy the darkest night if you try to
feel beyond darkness. The scents in the air, the noises of the street, the
beats of the city, the breath of the world.</span><span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 10pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;"><o:p> </o:p></span></div>

I don't think this is a word, though. The most accepted term would be "action figure customizing". But it's a wink to the title of a cocktail book, as custom figures and cocktails do have a common point : it's all about mixing parts.</span><br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;">To illustrate this idea, I'll do a sort of making of of my latest custom action figure (and <a href="http://www.figurerealm.com/viewcustomfigure.php?FID=64018" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">50th entry</a> at figurerealm) : Mr. Freeze.</span><br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;">The first step is a very funny one : design. You have to picture out what kind of figure you wanna get.</span><br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;">For Mr. Freeze, I had a lot of freedom, as the character had many looks through the years.</span><br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;"></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CgUpvKfTCoY/U9UPm95-MPI/AAAAAAAABWY/ppAMLBS_4Lo/s1600/Mr+Freeze+collage.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CgUpvKfTCoY/U9UPm95-MPI/AAAAAAAABWY/ppAMLBS_4Lo/s1600/Mr+Freeze+collage.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;">I choosed a "heavily armored" look, red goggles, an all-glass helmet with a big big freeze-gun.</span><br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;">Next, you have to select parts of existing figures you'll re-use for your custom. Here's another common point with cocktails : it's always good to start from a strong base.</span><br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;">I went with a grey Iron Man armor, changing upper legs and adding elements from a Destro Arctic Threat figure.</span><br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;">How did I know it would work ? Trials and errors, experience... For instance, transplanting upper legs needed some unforeseen re-tooling.</span><br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;"></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rLCX3AungHc/U9UQHElbZLI/AAAAAAAABWg/1GI11PCN0gk/s1600/Mr+Freeze+making+of.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rLCX3AungHc/U9UQHElbZLI/AAAAAAAABWg/1GI11PCN0gk/s1600/Mr+Freeze+making+of.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="color: #cc0000;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;">More often than not, you'll need to add sculpts : here it's the collar piece, the goggles, the ears and the helmet. Consider sculpts like bitters, you may go without it, but it won't be the same at all. It makes the whole thing come togeth</span><span style="color: #444444;">er.</span><br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;">And then painting. I'm running out of cocktail-comparisons here as it's where customs and cocktails go separate ways. You drink cocktails, you display customs. Ones have to taste good, others have to look good.</span><br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;">Last common point with cocktails but very specific to Mr. Freeze : ice, ice, baby...</span><br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;"></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #cc0000;">Mr Freeze is a bit like Fonzie...</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I've been busy with things unrelated with comics, drawing or cocktailing so I had nothing to post here.<br />
I have to mention, though, that, some six months ago, some articles I wrote for Scarce saw print at last. At last, because, Scarce being a fanzine, the print scheduling is far from being a sure thing. The articles were written in 2010-2011 and printed in <a href="http://scarcemag.blogspot.fr/2012/11/scarce-n78-est-sorti.html#!/2012/11/scarce-n78-est-sorti.html" target="_blank">november 2012</a>. They were about Garth Ennis run on the Punisher. I enjoyed this run so much that I felt like writing about it. I did two interviews by email of Lewis Larosa and Leandro Fernandez, who have penciled arcs of Punisher MAX. I even "hired" two other guys from the Internet (known through their comments on Amazon or through their blog) to write additional articles on the Punisher. So, it's been my very small "editor" experience.<br />
<br />
I also penciled a Frankie for the occasion :<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-RrwFmlb2aEk/UYgPsY_PHQI/AAAAAAAABJE/CzYoypzBYBg/s1600/Punisher+NB+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-RrwFmlb2aEk/UYgPsY_PHQI/AAAAAAAABJE/CzYoypzBYBg/s1600/Punisher+NB+1.jpg" height="320" width="226" /></a></div>
<br />
And finally, some weeks ago, I made a custom action figure in the Marvel Universe scale (4 inch).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-SQo9jQSgfF4/UYgRWHj4uOI/AAAAAAAABJQ/yAGODjuZQPY/s1600/IMG_4579.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-SQo9jQSgfF4/UYgRWHj4uOI/AAAAAAAABJQ/yAGODjuZQPY/s1600/IMG_4579.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
As I don't know when I'll do my next post, I'm giving you a glance at all my recent customs creations :<br />

But I don't mind being late at the party and I'm not gonna list my 10 favourites of the decade but one book for each year, the one that I remember the most.</span><br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;">I'll keep this one in english only (lazy me), but links to my reviews written in french will be provided when they exist.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;">2000 : JLA Earth2</span><br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;">Morrison -Quitely on the Justice League, a self-contained story with beautiful art, good plot and plenty of cool moments.</span><br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;">Bought this one for Christmas, as I was settling down in my new life as a worker (student no more).</span><br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;">From Batman, at the end of the story :</span><br />
<span style="color: #666666; font-style: italic;">"I've noticed something about people who try to change the world....The world turns around and changes them right back."</span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;">2001 : <a href="http://www.amazon.fr/Daredevil-Visionaries-Frank-Miller/dp/0785107711/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=english-books&qid=1293658408&sr=1-4">Daredevil Visionaries 2</a></span><br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;">Some of my favorites DD issues packed in one book. Memories of childhood revived by flipping pages.</span><br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;">Bought this in Paris, talked about it with an old friend at a café, late in september. Later, this conversation would spawn an <a href="http://redshaker.blogspot.com/2008/05/red-and-black.html">essay</a> about Daredevil and Batman.</span><br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;">From the introduction by Diana Schutz :</span><br />
<span style="color: #666666; font-style: italic;">"In every way, they</span><span style="color: #666666;"> (the stories) </span><span style="color: #666666; font-style: italic;">are timeless. Like the dreams of all us when we are still young. Like a friendship that lasts a lifetime."</span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;">2002 : <a href="http://www.amazon.fr/100-Bullets-Hang-Up-Low/dp/1840233613/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1293658373&sr=1-2">Hang up on the hang low</a> (100 Bullets TPB#3)</span><br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;">Might be the best arc of the whole series. Almost too bad it came so early in the series.</span><br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;">The first time Azz, Risso AND Mulvihill got together and knocked it out of the park.</span><br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;">A great father and son noir story.</span><br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;">From Curtis Hugues to Loop Hugues :</span><br />
<span style="color: #666666; font-style: italic;">"It's how it's played that makes it so goddamn special."</span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;">2003 : Counterfifth Detective (100 Bullets TPB#5)</span><br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;">Very cryptic story but excellent art.</span><br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;">Bought this one in NYC, makes it a little more special to me.</span><br />
<span style="color: #666666; font-style: italic;">"Who I am is Milo Garret (...) I drink too much and tip too little (...) I kick ass, and chase tail."</span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;">2004 : Preacher (the whole series)</span><br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;">I hadn't tried it before because the gore stuff was a bit too much for me.</span><br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;">Once you get past that, there's so much more to be found in this series.</span><br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;">I ordered and read all the TPBs in two months.</span><br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;">From Jesse to Tulip :</span><br />
<span style="color: #666666; font-style: italic;">"People like you an' me don't find each other too often in this damn world."</span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;">2005 : <a href="http://www.amazon.fr/Sleeper-Out-Cold-Ed-Brubaker/dp/1401201156/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&s=english-books&qid=1293658255&sr=1-9">Sleeper</a> (<a href="http://www.amazon.fr/Sleeper-False-Moves-Ed-Brubaker/dp/1401202888/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=english-books&qid=1293658255&sr=1-3">the</a> <a href="http://www.amazon.fr/Sleeper-Crooked-Line-Ed-Brubaker/dp/1401206182/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=english-books&qid=1293658255&sr=1-4">whole</a> <a href="http://www.amazon.fr/Sleeper-4-Long-Way-Home/dp/1401206271/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&s=english-books&qid=1293658255&sr=1-10">series</a>)</span><br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;">Holden Carver is fucked-up from the start. Brubaker and Phillips make us care for him til the end.</span><br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;">Another Amazon reading raid and a truely good read.</span><br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;">From Tao to Holden :</span><br />
<span style="color: #666666; font-style: italic;">"You are what you do. Not what you think."</span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;">2006 : Daredevil : <a href="http://www.amazon.fr/Daredevil-1-Devil-Inside-Out/dp/0785119884/ref=cm_cr-mr-title">The Devil Inside and Out</a></span><br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;">Another too strong start. If only Brubaker had kept this level on his run. It would have been legendary.</span><br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;">From the the Punisher to DD :</span><br />
<span style="color: #666666; font-style: italic;">"You're hurtin' a lot, right now, Murdock, with good reason. But you don't want to be me."</span><br />
<br />

<span style="color: #666666; font-style: italic;">Through the long, cold, dark night I've made of my life."</span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;">2009 : Wildcats V2 by Joe Casey & Sean Phillips</span><br />

<span style="color: #cc0000;">From Jacob Marlowe :</span><span style="color: #cc0000; font-style: italic;"><br /><span style="color: #666666;">"This world is what it is. To simply classify it is a useless endeavor. But to change it... That is the appropriate measure."</span></span><br />

My minor nitpick is that Ennis version of Frank Castle is rather "dry" cocktail-wise. So this run can't provide much stuff for the drinks and comics analysis (a thing that blog tries to do when its author doesn't muse on Daredevil pictures). Mais parfois, il suffit d'un petit quelque chose pour fournir un lien.<br /><br /><span style="color: rgb(204, 0, 0);">The second to last arc of Ennis on the series was titled "Long Cold Dark" and for a while, I felt it might also be a good cocktail name. The story in a nutshell : Frank versus returning big bad foe Barracuda with Frank's newfound daughter in the middle. An extremely violent tale but one filled with touching glances at the Punisher's remains of humanity.</span> <span style="color: rgb(204, 0, 0);">Hence my quest to create a cocktail recipe matching this story's greatness.</span><br />L'avant dernier story-arc d'Ennis sur la série MAX s'intitule "<a href="http://www.amazon.fr/product-reviews/078512814X/ref=dp_top_cm_cr_acr_txt?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=1">Long Cold Dark</a>" et ce titre m'a toujours semblé être un potentiel nom de cocktail. As I said, Garth Ennis writes Frank Castle mostly as a non-drinker, so if Frank had to drink something called "Long Cold Dark", it might only be a huge pot of cold coffee.</span> <span style="color: rgb(204, 0, 0);">But let's expand suspension of disbelief and explore potential drinks.</span> <span style="color: rgb(204, 0, 0);">First it seems quite obvious a cocktail with this name should be a long drink, cold (like most of the cocktails) and dark. That last one is the true limiting factor.</span> <span style="color: rgb(204, 0, 0);">I might have gone with a rum and coke but that would have been too much of a cheat.</span> <span style="color: rgb(204, 0, 0);">But then, I stumbled across some cans of Ginger Beer in an asian shop (Ginger Beer is not very easy to find in France)</span><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_j2S2jt5TgbE/TRo6soTRbzI/AAAAAAAABDQ/tZLenAe1sWY/s1600/PunisherCoffee.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 350px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_j2S2jt5TgbE/TRo6soTRbzI/AAAAAAAABDQ/tZLenAe1sWY/s400/PunisherCoffee.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5555817628721835826" border="0" /></a><span style="color: rgb(204, 0, 0);">Frank is tough enough to drink cold coffee</span><br />Le café froid ne fait pas peur au Punisher<br /></div><br />Le Punisher d'Ennis étant non-buveur, s'il fallait coller à l'esprit du run pour trouver une boisson nommé 'Long Cold Dark", on se retrouverait sans doute avec un grand verre de café froid.<br />Aussi, messieurs les puristes, il faudra pour la suite de l'article intensifier votre suspension d'incrédulité.<br />Le breuvage idoine se devrait d'être un long drink, froid et... de couleur sombre. Ce dernier point étant le plus problématique.<br />Un rhum-coca pour faire l'affaire mais ça serait quand même un peu de l'arnaque.<br />Et puis je suis tombé sur des canettes de bière au gingembre dans une épicerie asiatique (je n'en avais jusqu'alors jamais acheté).<br /><br /><span style="color: rgb(204, 0, 0);">Then I tried to tinkered the "Dark and Stormy", based on dark rum, ginger beer and lime juice.</span> <span style="color: rgb(204, 0, 0);">I thought replacing the rum with bourbon and adding bitters might result in something interesting... well, not really. The drink was not very dark nor tasty. Adding some cold coffee was the last step before pouring the glass down the drain.</span><br />J'ai alors essayé une variante du Dark and Stormy, cocktail à base de rhum, bière de gingembre et jus de citron vert. J'ai remplacé le rhum par du bourbon, ajouté un peu de bitters pour un résultat bof, bof. Pas très sombre et goût pas terrible. L'ajout de café froid à la mixture fut la dernière étape avant le vidage dans l'évier.<br /><br /><span style="color: rgb(204, 0, 0);">I had to find another idea. I considered an Irish Coffee with a skull motif traced on the cream atop the glass but it's supposed to be a cold drink and never tried to draw anything on cream. Plus, cream is white, it wouldn't quite match with the cocktail's name anymore !</span><br />Je devais trouver une autre idée. When you know you mostly use bitters in dashes only, what's the point to stock plenty of bottles? Why not sticking to Angostura only ? Well, it would be like cooking with only one spice. Bitters are the spice of the cocktail.</span><br />Un indice du syndrome cocktailien aigü est la collection de bitters. Quand on sait qu'ils ne s'utilisent que par traits, à quoi bon les accumuler ? Ne pourrait-on se limiter qu'à l'Angostura ? Oui, si on pense pouvoir cuisiner avec une seule épice. Ouais, voilà le truc, les bitters sont des épices à cocktail.<br /><br /><span style="color: rgb(204, 0, 0);">Let's hear what Doctor JP has to say about them :</span> <span style="color: rgb(204, 0, 0);">"Bitters, they are the totally necessary optional ingredient in cocktails.
