...busy making other plans
Well it's been so long since my last post that blogger's editing screens are all changed !
I've been busy with things unrelated with comics, drawing or cocktailing so I had nothing to post here.
I have to mention, though, that, some six months ago, some articles I wrote for Scarce saw print at last. At last, because, Scarce being a fanzine, the print scheduling is far from being a sure thing. The articles were written in 2010-2011 and printed in november 2012. They were about Garth Ennis run on the Punisher. I enjoyed this run so much that I felt like writing about it. I did two interviews by email of Lewis Larosa and Leandro Fernandez, who have penciled arcs of Punisher MAX. I even "hired" two other guys from the Internet (known through their comments on Amazon or through their blog) to write additional articles on the Punisher. So, it's been my very small "editor" experience.
I also penciled a Frankie for the occasion :
And finally, some weeks ago, I made a custom action figure in the Marvel Universe scale (4 inch).
As I don't know when I'll do my next post, I'm giving you a glance at all my recent customs creations :

A decade of comics
Most of comic-bloggers have run their Top Ten of the Decade last year. But I don't mind being late at the party and I'm not gonna list my 10 favourites of the decade but one book for each year, the one that I remember the most.
I'll keep this one in english only (lazy me), but links to my reviews written in french will be provided when they exist.
2000 : JLA Earth2
Morrison -Quitely on the Justice League, a self-contained story with beautiful art, good plot and plenty of cool moments.
Bought this one for Christmas, as I was settling down in my new life as a worker (student no more).
From Batman, at the end of the story :
"I've noticed something about people who try to change the world....The world turns around and changes them right back."
2001 : Daredevil Visionaries 2
Some of my favorites DD issues packed in one book. Memories of childhood revived by flipping pages.
Bought this in Paris, talked about it with an old friend at a café, late in september. Later, this conversation would spawn an essay about Daredevil and Batman.
From the introduction by Diana Schutz :
"In every way, they (the stories) are timeless. Like the dreams of all us when we are still young. Like a friendship that lasts a lifetime."
2002 : Hang up on the hang low (100 Bullets TPB#3)
Might be the best arc of the whole series. Almost too bad it came so early in the series.
The first time Azz, Risso AND Mulvihill got together and knocked it out of the park.
A great father and son noir story.
From Curtis Hugues to Loop Hugues :
"It's how it's played that makes it so goddamn special."
2003 : Counterfifth Detective (100 Bullets TPB#5)
Very cryptic story but excellent art.
Bought this one in NYC, makes it a little more special to me.
"Who I am is Milo Garret (...) I drink too much and tip too little (...) I kick ass, and chase tail."
2004 : Preacher (the whole series)
I hadn't tried it before because the gore stuff was a bit too much for me.
Once you get past that, there's so much more to be found in this series.
I ordered and read all the TPBs in two months.
From Jesse to Tulip :
"People like you an' me don't find each other too often in this damn world."
2005 : Sleeper (the whole series)
Holden Carver is fucked-up from the start. Brubaker and Phillips make us care for him til the end.
Another Amazon reading raid and a truely good read.
From Tao to Holden :
"You are what you do. Not what you think."
2006 : Daredevil : The Devil Inside and Out
Another too strong start. If only Brubaker had kept this level on his run. It would have been legendary.
From the the Punisher to DD :
"You're hurtin' a lot, right now, Murdock, with good reason. But you don't want to be me."
2007 : The Nightly News
Jonathan Hickman created a challenging masterpiece.
"The VOICE says : it's just the beginning."
2008 : Long Cold Dark - Punisher MAX
From Frank Castle :
"The sun slipped away behind me, the last sliver seeming to pause on the horizon, then succumbing to the black. And I drove on through the shadows of America...
Through the long, cold, dark night I've made of my life."
2009 : Wildcats V2 by Joe Casey & Sean Phillips
See this post for more details.
From Jacob Marlowe :
"This world is what it is. To simply classify it is a useless endeavor. But to change it... That is the appropriate measure."
2010 : The Gnawing (Scalped)
Dash on his mother's grave :
"You told me I'd have to face up to who I am. You were right about that.
Only thing is...
who I am ain't nothing nice."

Long Cold Dark... kinda
The Punisher MAX series by Garth Ennis is my favourite run on the char and one of the best in comics at all. My minor nitpick is that Ennis version of Frank Castle is rather "dry" cocktail-wise. So this run can't provide much stuff for the drinks and comics analysis (a thing that blog tries to do when its author doesn't muse on Daredevil pictures). But sometimes, things can start from a minor item, very remotely linked to cocktails, if related at all.
The second to last arc of Ennis on the series was titled "Long Cold Dark" and for a while, I felt it might also be a good cocktail name. The story in a nutshell : Frank versus returning big bad foe Barracuda with Frank's newfound daughter in the middle. An extremely violent tale but one filled with touching glances at the Punisher's remains of humanity. Hence my quest to create a cocktail recipe matching this story's greatness.
As I said, Garth Ennis writes Frank Castle mostly as a non-drinker, so if Frank had to drink something called "Long Cold Dark", it might only be a huge pot of cold coffee. But let's expand suspension of disbelief and explore potential drinks. First it seems quite obvious a cocktail with this name should be a long drink, cold (like most of the cocktails) and dark. That last one is the true limiting factor. I might have gone with a rum and coke but that would have been too much of a cheat. But then, I stumbled across some cans of Ginger Beer in an asian shop (Ginger Beer is not very easy to find in France)
Then I tried to tinkered the "Dark and Stormy", based on dark rum, ginger beer and lime juice. I thought replacing the rum with bourbon and adding bitters might result in something interesting... well, not really. The drink was not very dark nor tasty. Adding some cold coffee was the last step before pouring the glass down the drain.
I had to find another idea. I considered an Irish Coffee with a skull motif traced on the cream atop the glass but it's supposed to be a cold drink and never tried to draw anything on cream. Plus, cream is white, it wouldn't quite match with the cocktail's name anymore !
I then gave up aiming at a dark black final color and went with this :
1 1/2 oz of Appleton Estate Extra Rum / 4,5 cl de rhum Appleton Extra 12 ans d'âge
1 oz of sweet vermouth /3 cl de vermouth doux
1 oz oz of lime juice /3 cl de jus de citron vert
1/2 oz of Grand Marnier / 1,5 cl de Grand Marnier
a dash of bitters (angostura, Peychaud or else, your choice) / quelques traits de bitters
Stirr in long tall glass, add ice cubes, fill with ginger beer.
Well, it turned out not great but drinkable. If your ever try it, pre-chill the glass and use a score of cubes so you won't add to much ginger beer. It would overwhelm the other ingredients.
As it's my 100th post, I wanted to give a nod to my wife and my daughter. Thanks to them, my life is very far from being long, cold, dark.

Hornhead & Skullchest : a conclusion
Well, have I said everything I had to say about Daredevil and the Punisher ?
"No, not everything... just enough."
I have a related project but it might take a long time before I get at it and a longer time until I'm done with it.
'til then, here's the list of my "Hornhead & Skullchest" posts :
This evolution reflects comic-books evolution : an inclination for darker stories. Well, this is how it goes... But, at times, I' m a bit sad about it. My DD never gives up... whether it's a fight, a lover or... an ideal.
Thank you for reading and commenting. / Merci de m'avoir lu (et commenté).

Hornhead & Skullchest - "In Cell-Block D"
They serve justice, only in different ways : Matt Murdock aka Daredevil and Frank Castle aka the Punisher. They're some of my favorite characters though they seem to be polar opposites.
This belongs to a series of posts exploring their common history.
For the first arc of his run, "The Devil in Cell-Block D", Ed Brubaker had Matt Murdock in jail at Ryker's Island among a lot of his usual foes (the Owl, Hammerhead, the Kingpin, Bullseye...). And when things seemed to be at their worst, Brubaker sent Frank Castle in Ryker's too!
At the time, it was quite intriguing to see the Punisher going voluntarily into jail. Considering his past history with DD, one might have suspected he wanted to get some revenge on Murdock, talking him to admit his "by the book" super-heroism had failed. But, quite contrary, Frank was here to help Matt! He made Matt question his slow descent into ruthless violence. And, after the inevitable big riot at Rykers, Frank provided a perfect way out for Matt.
So, it took many years but we finally got it : a tale where Hornhead & Skullchest meet and don't fight each other! The most interesting thing is Brubaker's take on Frank Castle regarding Matt Murdock : Frank doesn't want to use Matt's methods but he doesn't want Matt to turn like him, either.
That was one of many great moments in this stellar arc, Bru's first and (a tad disappointingly considering the length of his run) best story-arc. On a sidenote, I think the consequences of "Matt in jail" were under-exploited, as following issues served to set things back to the "normal" statu-quo. As an idealist lawyer, Matt could have been much more shaken and disturbed by his time behind bars. After all, knowing where "his" ways lead criminals, are the Punisher's ways so wrong ?
"So not everything's changed - No, not everything... just enough..."

As an idealist lawyer, Matt could have been much more shaken and disturbed by his time behind bars. After all, knowing where "his" ways lead criminals, are the Punisher's ways so wrong ?
"So not everything's changed - No, not everything... just enough...""Alors tout n'a pas changé - Non, pas tout... juste assez..."

Hornhead & Skullchest - Means and Ends
They serve justice, only in different ways : Matt Murdock aka Daredevil and Frank Castle aka the Punisher. They're some of my favorite characters though they seem to be polar opposites.
This belongs to a series of posts exploring their common history.
A pattern we could deduce from former rounds is that when the action takes place in one character's series, this character has the higher ground. So, what about a mini-series featuring both? It could provide a "neutral ground" to tell a balanced story, without advantaging the one or the other. "Daredevil vs Punisher : Means and Ends" is a 6 issues mini-series by David Lapham, released in 2005 and providing us a good case study.
Each cover has two parts / Chaque couv' est en deux parties
the upper pictures a DD-Pun showdown / en haut, une baston DD-Punisher
while the lower is related to the issue / en bas, une illu davantage liée à l'épisode
Again, the series takes place during the "Lost Year" : Hammerhead and the Jackal are trying to take over the underworld of NYC, after the Kingpin's demise. As usual, Daredevil wants them arrested, while the Punisher wants them dead. The fresh touch comes from the backstory of the Bastellis, a family running a dinner, who are victims of a racket. The son Martin, is tempted by vigilantism, inspired by Frank Castle while the daughter, Mary, reminds Frankie of his wife...
Well, 6 issues is too much for me to venture into all the details so, instead I'll give you my list of the series strong and weak points.
Frank Castle on Times Square looks like Travis Bickle
Frank Castle sur Times Square, un côté "Taxi Driver"
Let's start with the bad stuff/on commence par les "moins" :
- The villains : Hammerhead and the Jackal (with an apparition of Bushwacker, too). The use of established villains can only be shoe-horning a story with the Punisher. He's supposed to be lethal but we know he won't be able to kill the villains. There's someone stronger than him or Daredevil to stop him : the editor.
- The chosen point of view : the tale is clearly told from the Punisher's side. We get into Frank's mind through inner monologue when DD is more distant (Lapham only uses third person narration on him) and sometimes only appears as a plot device.
- Unfitting art : Lapham is a good story-teller but his art doesn't quite fit the tale. It is at times too cartoony when the story is quite crude and dark. So we have a "MAX-like" Punisher rendered in a "War Journal" style. Unfitting.
- The lost year timeline isn't really acknowledged : DD doesnt really behave an ambiguous "King of Hell's Kitchen"
The good stuff/les "plus" :
- Story-telling is good. Though we can't expect lasting or significant consequences, we're often hooked and flip pages to see what happens next.
- Characterization is good with attention on details (the personalities of Hornhead and Skullchest transpires either on quiet scenes or action scenes)
- Cool scenes : the "neutral ground" of the mini permits both characters to shine (Punisher cleans a crowded bar on his own, Daredevil stops a car just by throwing his billy club). And just look at the last page of chapter five. Isn't it an arresting splash page ? Quite reminding of DD emerging from fire in Born Again.
- Lapham writes a badass DD ("It's never fun hurting the dogs. The handler on the other hand...") and a tortured yet solid Punisher
- The worst consequences of the Punisher's methods are addressed (bad role-model and stray bullets)
- The backstory (a boy fascinated by guns trying to protect his family) is predictable yet touching
So what's the verdict ? Between Hornhead and Skullchest, it ends with a draw. As for the series itself, it's a mixed bag. I'm kinda feeling Lapham didn't have the right means (established villains, borderline cartoony art) to reach the ends (noir tale, bloody action) he had in mind. It seems he aimed for a higher standard than you might expect from a mainstream book but someone didn't let him or he lost some steam somewhere down the road. So the series ends with only a mean-value score. But as it's not short of good moments, this series is worth reading.

Note : I found another review online, expressing views similar to mine but giving the series a better overall score (sorry Frenchies, it's in english only).

Here's another round between Hornhead and Skullchest. This one takes place in Daredevil v2 #65, written by Brian Michael Bendis, an anniversary issue including scenes from the "Lost year" after DD declared himself King of Hell's Kitchen. DD's new title leads the Punisher to question his morality : has DD become just another mobster? It's a multiple guest-artists issue but the one drawing the confrontation is Phil Hester.
"Put the gun down and get out of New york." Love is in the air!
Do they debate the issue peacefully?
If you say "Yes", you should know better.
I like the way Hester draws DD. Except for the boots...
A guy with machine guns and the other carrying a billy-club...
Who would have you put your money on ?
This is a kind of flip-story of the "Welcome back, Frank" issue. We're in the Daredevil series, so he has to win and look cool. Writing and art are good but overall, it seems the Hornhead-Skullchest relationship has become stale. The sole twist is that Frank tries to stop DD because he thinks he's gone to the other side. But he tries to do it in a clumsy way and it seems to be just an excuse for Hornhead to shine by beating the Punisher.
A good setup, not entirely well exploited.

This belongs to a series of posts exploring their common history.
When both characters were relaunched in the Marvel Knights imprint, their paths crossed again on multiple occasions. One of their most significant confrontation took place in the third issue of the Punisher mini-series "Welcome Back Frank", by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon. Issue is titled "The Devil by the horns".
Frank Castle wants to kill Dino Gnucci, a well-known mobster, defended by Nelson & Murdock because, though Dino's a criminal, he didn't commit the particular crime he's been charged of. "Those do-gooders care so much about the letter of the law they took the case. They'll get him off." thinks Frankie.
So, of course, Frank tries to shoot Dino.
And, of course, Daredevil shows up to stop the Punisher.
"If you could just see that you have a choice..."
"Si seulement tu pouvais voir que tu as le choix..."
The twist is, this time Frank is prepared and uses a sonic device to neutralize DD. Then, he confronts DD to a moral dilemma : chained, with only one bullet in a gun strapped on his hand, DD has to choose to fatally shoot the Punisher or let the Punisher shoot Dino Gnucci. "If you don't shoot, you've got a death on your conscience. A death you could have prevented. If you do shoot, you're a killer."
"It's time for that choice you were telling me about."
- What kind of choice is that ? - The one I make every time I pull the trigger.
Steve Dillon draws a really ridiculous Hornhead.
It turns out there's no firing pin on the pistol and Castle kills Gnucci and then knocks DD unconscious.
That's got to be the first win for Skullchest in his confrontations with Hornhead. The dialogue is well-written, the scene flows and you can see the Punisher's arguments. But I can't help feeling that story-wise, the game was crooked as the choice given by the Punisher. The story taking place in the Punisher series and being written by Garth Ennis, we can see a bias : the Punisher is cool, he is right and other characters are goofies. This approach will make for other midly entertaining yet uninteresting tales as "Confederacy of dunces"before the series gets cancelled and relaunched in the MAX Imprint (for a darker and much more interesting take on the Punisher, still by Ennis).

Hornhead & Skullchest : Over the Edge
They serve justice, only in different ways : Matt Murdock aka Daredevil and Frank Castle aka the Punisher. They're some of my favorite characters though they seem to be polar opposites.
This belongs to a series of posts exploring their common history.
Issue 344 is part two of a big crossover : "Over the Edge". The story is that the Punisher loses his mind (well, I don't mean that normally he's a 100% sane person but...) and blames Nick Fury for the murder of his family at Central Park. Writer is JM de Matteis and penciler is Ron Wagner, with inks by Bill Reinhold.
At the beginning of this issue, we can see that Daredevil isn't at his best either : he's in his "motor-cross days" (having faked his death, he took a darker, armored-costume) and is having a more and more violent behaviour towards criminals.
FYI : those thieves were only stealing paintings !
But his mind's not totally gone and he has remorse, knowing something's wrong with him but having no clue on how to fix it.
Meanwhile, the Punisher is targeting "Scorpio", Nick Fury's son. His inner monologue shows is also quite conflicted and disturbed.
Frankie hesitates to pull a trigger : clearly, he's not in his normal state ;-)
And the other guest-star of the issue is, of course, Nick Fury. He knows he's wanted by Frank Castle but he's also quite moody, so, instead of hiding or tracking the Punisher, he's wandering in his old neighborhood : Hell's Kitchen, chasing ghosts from his past and talking with his former kid-self.
Nick Fury grew up in Hell's Kitchen. Like you know who...
On a rooftop, Fury thinks about his life and, feeling he's closer from the end than from the beginning, he's warming up thinking about his son (you know, the one the Punisher was targeting previously).
Daredevil is also wandering in Hell's Kitchen and ends up at the schoolyard, recalling the beatings he took when the other kids were mocking him, calling him Daredevil.
Once, I made a one page story : What if Daredevil had been called differently ?
So, Nick Fury arrives in the same schoolyard and after a brief fight (because DD is again out of his mind), they talk.
"DD : I've been chasing a few ghosts of my own tonight.
Fury : Yeah? Y'catch any ?"
Fury : Ah? T'en as attrapé ?"
The two following silent panels speak for themselves.
Fury is even considering to have a drink with DD but then the Punisher attacks. Damn you, Frankie ! You robbed me from a drinking scene for my Daredevil drinks posts !
Daredevil and Nick Fury quickly neutralize the Punisher but as Nick leaves DD to check his badly beaten son, Castle escapes.
At first, Fury thinks his son is dead but DD, thanks to his super-senses, detects a trace a life in Scorpio and medical assistance from SHIELD arrive in time to save him (Castle only drugged Scorpio but he overdosed and without DD he would have really died).
The Punisher left a note mentioning unlike Fury, he doesn't "do"families.
At dawn, DD has a mental talk with his younger self who lectures him to make him look up. But his future remain uncertain.
As a crossover, "Over the Edge" is far from being a masterpiece but this chapter makes for a good reading. We get to see a borderline Daredevil relishing on nearly random violence facing a crazier than usual yet forgiving Punisher. Nick Fury provides the link between Hornhead and Skullchest. An old soldier like Castle and former Hell's Kitchen kid, like Matt.
All three of them are damaged goods. The issue is filled with nostalgia and melancholy, but in the end, it delivers a message of hope.

Hornhead & Skullchest : Chichester/Weeks part 2
They serve justice, only in different ways : Matt Murdock aka Daredevil and Frank Castle aka the Punisher. They're some of my favorite characters though they seem to be polar opposites.
This belongs to a series of posts exploring their common history.
After "Body Count", the DD/Punisher confrontation by Chichester/Weeks concludes in "Murder by Numbers" (a title which is a bit of pain for me to translate in french...)

So, DD was about to be run-over by a bus? No way! a throw of his billy club, a ricochet and the clutch is hit, stopping the bus!
Again, a cool "without fear attitude" example of Chichester's DD.
The bus stops but the fight continues!
The Punisher grabs Tombstone. Le Punisher fait du rentre-dedans à Tombstone.
Together they land on a cab roof.
While Frankie is down, DD takes a gun and calls a bluff to the "T boys". But having recovered, the Punisher throws his knife to the Taskmaster and DD only manage to deviate the weapon...
So, Taskmaster is out of the game. Matt gives him a visit at Bellevue Hospital to get a clue about Tombstone's next hit.
The final fight takes place at Grand Central : Tombstone is disguised as a clown and armed with an acid cream-pie!

The Punisher's also there, hidden in the celing, ready to snipe./Le Punisher est caché dans le plafond, prêt à tirer.
In an "only in comic-books" acrobatic move, Daredevil manages to stop both Tombstone and the Punisher.

He then gives a lecture to Frankie but let him leave. The last page reveals the Hand, in search of a new "top assassin", organized the murder-contest.
Here's a clear win for Hornhead. All in all, these two issues don't add much to the DD-Punisher relationship. Yet, there are a plenty of action-scenes but also short but good insights to Matt/Daredevil personality through his inner narration. Plus, we get to see a very proactive Daredevil that I'm kinda missing these days.
