Happy 2009 from DD
Here's a pic of Daredevil wishing you a happy new year. The design is taken from a Uncanny X-Men cover by Dave Cockrum, the style is heavily influenced by John Romita JR (JRJR, as some call him). I'm a graphic vampire.

Look up. Get down.
Well, it's that time of the year when you kinda feel you have to say something clever or something nice yet everything is so cliché. I could wish only all the best to you but I've been recently reminded that shit happens.
So, good old Daredevil suggests me this advice : Look up & Get down (kinda cryptic but unclarity can be a good substitute for cleverness).

...busy making other plans
Well it's been so long since my last post that blogger's editing screens are all changed !
I've been busy with things unrelated with comics, drawing or cocktailing so I had nothing to post here.
I have to mention, though, that, some six months ago, some articles I wrote for Scarce saw print at last. At last, because, Scarce being a fanzine, the print scheduling is far from being a sure thing. The articles were written in 2010-2011 and printed in november 2012. They were about Garth Ennis run on the Punisher. I enjoyed this run so much that I felt like writing about it. I did two interviews by email of Lewis Larosa and Leandro Fernandez, who have penciled arcs of Punisher MAX. I even "hired" two other guys from the Internet (known through their comments on Amazon or through their blog) to write additional articles on the Punisher. So, it's been my very small "editor" experience.
I also penciled a Frankie for the occasion :
And finally, some weeks ago, I made a custom action figure in the Marvel Universe scale (4 inch).
As I don't know when I'll do my next post, I'm giving you a glance at all my recent customs creations :

One last post for 2011
I guess it's the right time to up my postcount for 2011.
I've been very busy with real life these last months. I've changed of job, bought a house and had a second daughter.
Yet, with the holiday season, I've had time to read a few comics and here are my comments about them.
JLA : another nail, Fantastic Four : The End and Avengers Prime : surely that Alan Davis guy can draw. And his writing is good, too (especially in FF : the End).
Les Chroniques de Conan, 1977 (french reprints of Savage Sword of Conan from the year 1977) : those Buscema and Alcala guys were no slouches either.
Batman and the Monster Men, Batman and the Mad Monk : Matt Wagner can draw and write ! I only wonder how many tales DC will manage to pack in Batman "first years".
The Walking Dead (book 1 and 2) : like the Zombie cocktail : potent stuff but not for me.
Chew (book 1 and 2) : more to my taste.
Criminal : the last of the innocent. Crime doesn't pay. Except when you can write good stories about it, like Brubaker and Phillips.
Scalped : the series will end in 2012 and I'll miss it (but at least, it's no cancellation but the planned ending).
And last but not least : the Daredevil relaunch. DD got back his cool, he's no more a pawn in the series and is graced with very nice art. What's to asked before his next breakdown ?
See you next year.

DD fighting in 2D / Baston avec DD en 2D
Though I'm a cocktail geek, sometimes nitpicking about the use of rye or bourbon and bitters in manhattan, I also like simple things. Like 2D fighting games.
Bien qu'étant amateur de cocktails et de breuvages un peu complexes, j'aime aussi les choses simples. Comme les jeux de baston.
So, when I discovered a Daredevil character had been developped on MUGEN, I had to download it.
Alors quand j'ai vu qu'un perso de DD existait pour MUGEN, je l'ai vite téléchargé.
But the thing is, the standard character in MUGEN is only developped with one "view" (facing left or right, the same image is used). And for DD, it's a bit frustrating as we can see the DD logo reverted or the billy club holster shifting from one leg to the other... So, something had to be done to fix that. I asked permission from the original authors of the character and here is my version, with asymetric sprites so DD can look right on both sides of the screen.
Mais, en standard, les persos MUGEN sont uniquement développés avec une seule vue (la même image est utilisée que le personnage soit sur la gauche ou la droite de l'écran). Et pour DD, c'est un peu gênant, car on voit son logo inversé et son étui de lasso-canne se balader d'une jambe à l'autre.
Il fallait donc faire quelque chose.
Avec la permission des auteurs de la version existante, j'ai updaté le personnage avec des images complémentaires, afin que le logo et l'étui apparaissent toujours "à l'endroit".
It's been a lot of work just to fix a perhaps un-noticed detail but I felt I had to try. And maybe the cocktail-geek inside me likes his simple things a little bit more complicated...
Mine de rien, c'était beaucoup de boulot pour corriger un simple détail mais bon, je dois aimer la complexité même dans les choses simples. ;-)

Jeet Kune Draw

When you're a comic-fan, you can tell who penciled a panel just by looking at it. Because you're a kind of geek, sure, but also because each artist has his own style : a way to draw a nose or lips, a shading technique, the use or thick or fine lines...
Un fan de comics peut reconnaître un dessinateur en regardant une seule case.
Parce que c'est un fan, mais aussi parce que chaque artiste a un style : une façon de dessiner les nez ou les lèvres, de rendre les ombres, un trait plus ou moins épais...
When you're an amateur artist, one of the hardest thing is to find your style. I'm past my thirties and I haven't found mine, yet.
One day, I might try to ape Eduardo Risso, the next, I'll mimic JR JR. The result might turn ok but too often "style-less".
Trouver son style est une sorte de mini-graal pour tout dessinateur amateur. A trente ans passés, je n'ai toujours pas trouvé le mien. Un jour, j'essaye de faire du Risso et le jour suivant, je singe John Romita JR.
Le résultat peut être correct mais trop souvent dénué de style.

But one of the cool points of not having a style, is you can always try new things. Your art can't get stale (as long as you're practicing and trying to improve yourself).
Mais un des avantages du manque de style, c'est la recherche d'un style et le travail d'expérimentation, les essais que ce la permet. Votre dessin ne se sclérose pas (tant que vous vous entrainez et que vous cherchez à vous améliorer...).
Lately, I quite enjoyed the works of "Batman and Robin" 's artist : Frank Quitely. His style has a more delicate linework than my usual influences.
Dernièrement, j'ai bien aimé le travail de Frank Quitely sur "Batman et Robin".
Il a un trait plus fin que mes influences habituelles.
I did a dynamic duo / Voici un fanart de Batman et Robin :
And of course, a man without fear / et bien sûr, un homme sans peur !

Two pieces of cake
Pour améliorer le p'tit déj du jour, j'ai amené à mes collègues 2 moitiés de gâteaux : une tarte aux pommes et un gâteau au chocolat, tous deux confectionnés dimanche après-midi.Voici les recettes :
Tarte aux pommes :
Pâte brisée
Compote de pommes
2 grosses pommes Granny
Confiture d'abricots
Sucre vanillé
Précuire la pâte dans un four à 180° C pendant 10 minutes environ.
Peler et couper les pommes.
Tartiner la pâte de compote de pommes, disposer les pommes, recouvrir de confiture d'abricots, saupoudrer de sucre vanillé.
Remettre au four à 180°C pendant 20 minutes environ.
Gâteau au chocolat :200g de farine
25 g de sucre
3 oeufs
1 sachet de levure
100 g de poudre d'amandes
100 g de cacao en poudre
2 cuillères à soupe de Nutella
4 cl de liqueur de chocolat (facultatif)
Un sachet de noix de pecan
Préchauffer le four à 200°C.
Séparer les blancs des jaunes d'oeufs.
Dans un saladier, battre les jaunes avec le sucre, rajouter la farine, la levure et la poudre de cacao.
Faire monter les blancs en neige, les incorporer à la pâte.
Ajouter le Nutella puis la poudre d'amandes.
Ajouter la liqueur de chocolat.
Beurrer un moule rond, y disposer les noix de pecan et les recouvrir avec la pâte.
Mettre au four à 200°C pendant 20-25 minutes.

Daredevil for a day
Last saturday was my bachelor party.
I got to be dressed as Daredevil (sorta), run an investigation, do some wine tasting, chase a villain and save the day.

Mon discours de mariage
Retranscription approximative, version director's cut :
Bonsoir à tous, nous (oui, maintenant il faut s'habituer à dire nous) sommes très heureux que vous soyez venus ce soir. Moi-même, je suis à la fois heureux et un peu surpris d'être là car si on m'avait dit il y a quelques années que je marierais en 2008, je n'y aurais sans doute pas cru.
NDLR : Ici, j'ai oublié de dire : "Parfois l'amour est comme un ninja, il frappe par surprise !"
Mais je ne dois pas être la seule personne à avoir été surprise. Lors de l'annonce de notre mariage, plusieurs fois les questions sont revenues.
"Est-ce que tu es sûr ?" comme si c'était une nouvelle grave...
"As-tu bien réfléchi ?" : moi qui ne me posait pas trop de questions, ça m'a fait gamberger.
Vous savez, moi je pense que la vie... c'est comme le football.
NDLR : réaction outrée de mon épouse "Tu as osé la comparaison !"
Et le mariage, dans la vie, c'est comme dans le football : c'est une question d'engagement.
D'engagement et de timing : lorsque deux joueurs vont vers le même but, s'ils s'attendent trop, le gardien sort ou bien il y a hors-jeu et l'occasion est perdue...
Une autre métaphore, non footbalistique celle-là, serait de dire que pour faire un bon mariage, c'est comme pour les cocktails : les deux ingrédients ne doivent pas être identique. Jus d'orange + jus d'orange, ce n'est pas un cocktail terrible. Dans un couple comme dans un cocktail, les ingrédients doivent se mélanger harmonieusement tout en exprimant leur caractère.
Mais je théorise sur le mariage et vous tous, dans cette assemblée, vous connaissez cela bien mieux que moi : le mariage est une formidable institution qui permet à deux personnes d'affronter ensemble des problèmes qu'elles n'auraient pas eus séparément.
Mais il permet aussi, sans aucun doute, de partager des bonheurs que l'on aurait pas connu autrement.
Pour conclure : je vous remercie encore d'être venus ce soir partager notre bonheur. Et je remercie particulièrement Viviane, qui est venue dans ma vie et qui a accepté de rester !

Good evening everybody, we (will have to get used with the "we") are very happy to have you all gathered tonight. Myself, I'm happy but also a bit surprised to be here because couple of years ago, had someone told me I'd marry on 2008, I wouldn't have believed him .
Here is a proverb I forgot to mention : "Sometimes, love is like a ninja : it strikes by surprise !"
But I mustn't be the one who's been surprised. When we announced our wedding, questions were raised.
"Are you suuuurrre ?" like checking bad news...
"Did you give it enough thought ?" : that started the inner questioning process.
You know, I think life is like football (soccer).
My wife wasn't so happy with this comparison.
And considering marriage in life, it's like in football : you've got to engage.
Engagement and timing : like when two players are running towards the goal, if they wait for too long, the goalkeeper blocks the ball or there's an offside and the opportunity is lost.
Another metaphor, not footbal-related : marriage is like a cocktail. Ingredients don't have to be identical. Orange juice + orange juice makes poor cocktail. In a marriage or in a cocktail, ingredients have to mix well while keeping their own character.
But I'm trying to redefine marriage while most of you know this better than me : marriage is a wonderful institution that enables two persons to face together problems they would never have encountered on their own.
But also, without a doubt, it enables to share moments of happiness that would have remained unknown otherwise.
To conclude : again, thank you all for coming tonight to share moments of happiness.
And special thanks to Viviane, who came into my life and decided to stay!

Jus d'orange + jus d'orange, ce n'est pas un cocktail terrible. Dans un couple comme dans un cocktail, les ingrédients doivent se mélanger harmonieusement tout en exprimant leur caractère.
Mais je théorise sur le mariage et vous tous, dans cette assemblée, vous connaissez cela bien mieux que moi : le mariage est une formidable institution qui permet à deux personnes d'affronter ensemble des problèmes qu'elles n'auraient pas eus séparément.
Mais il permet aussi, sans aucun doute, de partager des bonheurs que l'on aurait pas connu autrement.
Pour conclure : je vous remercie encore d'être venus ce soir partager notre bonheur. Et je remercie particulièrement Viviane, qui est venue dans ma vie et qui a accepté de rester !

Good evening everybody, we (will have to get used with the "we") are very happy to have you all gathered tonight. Myself, I'm happy but also a bit surprised to be here because couple of years ago, had someone told me I'd marry on 2008, I wouldn't have believed him .
Here is a proverb I forgot to mention : "Sometimes, love is like a ninja : it strikes by surprise !"
But I mustn't be the one who's been surprised. When we announced our wedding, questions were raised.
"Are you suuuurrre ?" like checking bad news...
"Did you give it enough thought ?" : that started the inner questioning process.
You know, I think life is like football (soccer).
My wife wasn't so happy with this comparison.
And considering marriage in life, it's like in football : you've got to engage.
Engagement and timing : like when two players are running towards the goal, if they wait for too long, the goalkeeper blocks the ball or there's an offside and the opportunity is lost.
Another metaphor, not footbal-related : marriage is like a cocktail. Ingredients don't have to be identical. Orange juice + orange juice makes poor cocktail. In a marriage or in a cocktail, ingredients have to mix well while keeping their own character.
But I'm trying to redefine marriage while most of you know this better than me : marriage is a wonderful institution that enables two persons to face together problems they would never have encountered on their own.
But also, without a doubt, it enables to share moments of happiness that would have remained unknown otherwise.
To conclude : again, thank you all for coming tonight to share moments of happiness.
