Cela fait un an que le film Dark Knight est sorti.
Il était bon. Mais pas aussi bon que "The Dark Knight Returns", mon bat-bouquin favori.
TDKR is a violent yet clever tale masterfully told by Frank Miller (+Klaus Janson & Lynn Varley). The story : at age 50 (approx), after ten years of retirement, Bruce Wayne takes back the mantle of the Bat to clean Gotham City.
TDKR est un récit violent mais intelligent, raconté de main de maître par Frank Miller (avec Klaus Janson à l'encrage et Lynn Varley aux couleurs).
Résumé : à la cinquantaine, après dix ans de retraite, Bruce Wayne rempile comme Batman pour nettoyer Gotham City.
I've read this book times and times again. I can snap-quote some passages as I know them by heart.
J'ai lu ce livre des tonnes de fois. Je peux réciter des passages entiers tellement je les connais par coeur.
Rather than a detailed review or in-depth analysis, I decided to revisit four scenes with a fan-art drawing, each scene being taken from a different chapter of the book (warning, spoilers!).
Plutôt qu'une critique détaillée, j'ai décidé de revisiter ce monument à travers des fanarts de certaines scènes (une de chaque chapitre).
The Dark Knight Returns
At the end of chapter one, Batman confronts Harvey Dent, who had his face surgically remade and was supposedly reformed from his criminal life as Two-Face. But deep inside, he remained a twisted villain, he couldn't give up his true nature, as Bruce Wayne can't stop being a Batman.
A la fin du premier chapitre, Batman se confronte à Harvey Dent, dont le visage avait été refait et qui était supposément réhabilité. Mais à l'intérieur, il demeurait mauvais, ne pouvant vaincre sa nature profonde, tout comme Bruce Wayne ne peut arrêter d'être Batman.

Chapter two is about Batman fighting the gang of the Mutants, symbols of the new generation of criminals. After having their leader cleaning his clock, Bats calls for a revenge in the mud. This time, rather than relying purely on brute force, he carefully and patiently takes the Mutant leader apart (taking his sight, then arms away, finishing with his legs). It's a fantastic scene as we can feel his opponent is really dangerous but still, Batman manages to stay in control... That feeling is in great parts conveyed through the inner monologue of Batman. His victory will cause the Mutants to disband, some of them becoming the Sons of Batman and turning into vigilantes.
Le chapitre deux est consacré à la lutte de Batman contre le gang des mutants, symbole de la nouvelle génération de criminels infestant Gotham City. Après s'être fait dérouillé par leur chef, Batman organise une revanche dans la boue. Plutôt que d'user de force brute, il met patiemment son adversaire hors de combat (en l'aveuglant, lui paralysant les membres un à un). C'est une scène remarquablement bien faite puisqu'on sent la dangerosité de l'adversaire mais aussi que Batman garde le contrôle de la situation. cela est en grande partie véhiculé par le monologue de Batman.
Sa victoire aura pour conséquence la dissolution du gang des mutants, certains se reconvertissant en justiciers, les fils de Batman.
Lui donner juste le bon genre d'entaille au dessus des yeux.Le genre qui saigne...
The end of the third chapter sees the final duel between Batman and the Joker, at an amusement park, in theTunnel of Love (!). Stabbed several times, Batman goes for an extreme measure and twisted the Joker's neck, stopping just before killing him. But the Joker being crazy, he manages to finish the job, commiting suicide and leaving all the blame to Batman. Before that final scene, we also get glimpses of Batman remorse about the Joker, remembering all the people he (Batman) has murdered by letting the Joker live. It's a great chapter as the Joker was in a sort of cathatonic state before Batman came back. This chapter raises all kind of questions about Batman's moral ambiguity (Does he create the evil he fights ? Should he use lethal force ?)
La fin du chapitre trois nous livre le duel final entre Batman et le Joker, dans un parc d'attractions, dans le tunnel de l'amour (!). Ayant reçu plusieurs coups de couteau, Batman se résoud à tordre le cou au Joker, s'arrêtant tout juste avant de le tuer. Mais, en bon cinglé, le Joker se finit lui-même afin que la réputation de Batman devienne celle d'un assassin.
Avant ce grand final, nous avons droit à des bribes de pensées de Batman, examinant sa relation avec le Joker, contemplant "toutes les personnes qu'il (Batman) a tuées, en le laissant vivre".
C'est un chapitre très fort, puisque le Joker était dans un état cathatonique avant le retour de Batman. Les questions sur l'ambiguïté morale de la chauve souris sont posées : Est-il à l'origine du mal qu'il combat ? Doit-il tuer ?
Son cou devra faire l'affaire...The Dark Knight Falls
The fourth and final chapter sets up a fight between Batman and... Superman! Controlled by the US government, Supes has to stop Bats, who's acting as total outlaw as, in this continuum, the USA have banned vigilantes for years... Batman uses an armor in order to stand a chance, face to the outstanding powers of Superman. Bruce almost beats Clark (with a little help of Green Arrow and kryptonite) but finally falls. The last page tells us he faked his death and has started to train a small group of ex-thugs to fight the establishment ("in a world plagued by worse than thieves and murderers").
Le quatrième et dernier chapitre met face à face Batman et... Superman ! Contrôlé par le gouvernement, Sup doit stopper Batounet, qui est hors-la-loi puisque dans ce récit, les USA ont banni les justiciers depuis des années.
Equipé d'une armure pour se donner une chance face aux incroyables pouvoirs de Superman, Bruce arrive presque à vaincre Clark (grâce à Green Arrow et une flêche à la Kryptonite) mais succombe finalement.
La dernière page nous montre que sa mort a été mise en scène et qu'il a commencé à entraîné un groupe de jeunes pour combattre les pouvoirs en place ("dans un monde miné par pire que des voleurs et des meurtriers").
Il est plus que temps que tu apprennes ce que signifie...... être un homme.
