DD : Different Designs

About a year ago, I posted a series of drawings musing with Daredevil's costume.
Since, I 've come across some cool stuff by other DD fans.
Myself, I had a few ideas left but no time to materialize them. But in the last few days, I managed to take some time to draw. As I wanted to work as fast as I could, the colors were done directly on paper with markers and the text only was computer-added.
Il y a plus d'un an, j'avais dessiné quelques variantes amusantes de costumes de DD.
Depuis, j'ai pu voir d'autres illustrations faites par des fans.
De mon côté, j'avais encore quelques idées mais pas de temps pour les mettre sur papier, jusqu'à la semaine dernière... Souhaitant faire au plus vite, j'ai colorisé au feutre et rajouté le lettrage par ordi.

So, by chronological order of making (and reverse order of timeline), I'm bringing you :

The futuristic Daredevil : where (and when) no man without fear has gone before.
I know there's already been one or two 2099 versions but hey, the future is still to be written, after all. Star Trek gave me the inspiration for the black and red design and the mask kinda evokes in me the Batman Beyond character. I gave him an energy stick (though it looks like a short lightsaber, it's less lethal) as a futuristic upgrade of his billy club.
His story ? In a very distant century, one of Matt Murdock's cell is cloned by a bunch of scientists hoping to revive the great heroes of the past. But the process is altered by a sabotage of "you name it" fundamentalists and the clone is blind. Shortly after, the group of scientist is slaughtered and Daredevil is revived. Up to him to avenge his "fathers" !

Il y a certes eu des versions "2099" de Daredevil mais, bon, le futur reste toujours à écrire, non ?
Le look général m'a été inspiré par les uniformes de Star Trek et le costume de Batman : la relève. Ce DD arbore une matraque d'énergie (ça ressemble à un sabre laser en plus court mais ce n'est pas aussi mortel) à la place de l'antique lasso-canne.
Son histoire ? Dans un lointain futur, une cellule de Matt Murdock est clonée par un groupe de savants souhaitant ressusciter les grands héros du passé. Mais le processus est perturbé par un groupe d'activistes et le clone créé est aveugle. Peu de temps après, les savants sont executés et Daredevil est de retour. A lui de venger la mort de ses "pères" !

The College Boy Daredevil : a look without fear.
Matt Murdock is from working class extraction. But what if Jack Murdock had managed his career better ? His son might have been a happy-go-lucky college boy trained by Master Izo himself instead of Stick. After all, Elektra herself was a wealthy girl, trained to join the cast. About the "costume" : the american college jacket is a classic and it just begged to be decorated with a double D. On the shoes : I thought sneakers would be appropriate for ninja training.

Matt Murdock est d'origine sociale modeste. Mais que se serait-il passé si Jack Murdock avait eu plus de succès dans sa carrière ? Son fils aurait pu avoir une jeunesse dorée entrainé par le jovial Maître Izo à la place de Stick? Après tout, Elektra était aussi d'un milieu aisé et elle a été entraînée pour rejoindre les Chastes.
A propos des vêtements : la veste American College est un classique qui ne demandait qu'à être orné d'un "DD". Pour les chaussures : les sneakers me semblaient appropriées pour un élève ninja.

The Feodal Japan Daredevil : a Red Ronin.
Before Shadowland, DD had just taken control of the Hand and his minions had "DD-like" ninja-costumes. But for DD himself, we had to wait for the main event to begin to get... a mildly interesting costume (for me, the blades on the wrists are neither functional or good looking). So I had to try my take on a Japanized DD. I modified the ninja costume of Batman Begins and added a Kabuto (to strike fear in the heart of his opponents) and a Kusarigama (with a chain evoking the billy-club lasso, only deadlier).
The possible story : in feodal Japan, a Ninja quits the Hand to follow his own path. Alone and tracked by his former associates, he becomes a warrior without Master and a man without fear.

Avant "Shadowland", DD avait pris le contrôle de la Main et ses partisans se sont retrouvés affublés de tenues modifiées à la sauce DD. Mais pour DD lui-même, il fallut attendre l'event pour découvrir... un costume plutôt bof (pour moi, les lames sur les poignets ne sont ni fonctionnelles ni esthétiques). Je me devais d'essayer de pondre ma propre version japonisante.
J'ai modifié le costume de ninja de Batman Begins et rajouté un Kabuto (pour effrayer les ennemis) et un Kusarigama (faucille-chaîne évoquant le lasso-canne mais en plus dangereux).
L'intrigue potentielle : au Japon féodal, un ninja quitte la Main pour suivre sa propre voie. Seul et traqué par ses anciens pairs, il devient un guerrier sans maître et un homme sans peur.

Looking for a new job ?

Not much time for blogging, but here's a pic I've done some months ago, for a french fanzine (don't even know if it made the final cut...), featuring some well-known Daredevil villains.
Un dessin que j'avais envoyé pour le portfolio Super-Vilains de Scarce 75 (ne l'ayant pas lu, j'ignore si il a pu être casé). Forcément, j'ai tapé dans la galerie d'adversaires de DD.

Shadowland : not my cup of tea

For years, some Daredevil fans used to be annoyed that their character didn't get enough attention. The creative teams were good but the book was a bit under the radar. Nowadays, that has changed with Shadowland. "Careful what you wish for." Unfortunately, this event doesn't thrill me that much. I've commented on other blogs that it's a kind of World War Hulk Redux for me. DD goes mad, takes on NYC, other heroes will fail until the last chapter where dumb DD will realize he's been played. Next arc, please.

Les fans de DD qui auraient longtemps souhaité une plus grande exposition pour leur perso fétiche doivent se mordre les doigts : Shadowland donne un coup de projecteur sur DD mais lui donne un éclairage plutôt raté. Notre héros passe du mauvais côté, va bastonner ses ex-collègues avant, sans doute, de réaliser son erreur au dernier chapitre.
Je passe mon tour.

Custom Bitters

Real life doesn't leave me much time to blog, but I shouldn't get bitter, should I ? Instead, let's get some bitters !
Je n'ai guère le temps d'updater ce blog mais j'essaye de ne pas trop en concevoir d'amertume... quoique.

A strong hint of cocktail-geekery is a large collection of bitters. When you know you mostly use bitters in dashes only, what's the point to stock plenty of bottles? Why not sticking to Angostura only ? Well, it would be like cooking with only one spice. Bitters are the spice of the cocktail.
Un indice du syndrome cocktailien aigü est la collection de bitters. Quand on sait qu'ils ne s'utilisent que par traits, à quoi bon les accumuler ? Ne pourrait-on se limiter qu'à l'Angostura ? Oui, si on pense pouvoir cuisiner avec une seule épice. Ouais, voilà le truc, les bitters sont des épices à cocktail.

Let's hear what Doctor JP has to say about them : "Bitters, they are the totally necessary optional ingredient in cocktails. You might not notice what they bring precisely but you'll surely notice their absence. Bitters are ninjas flavoring elements for your drinks."

Earlier this year, I went beyond the psychogical number of ten bitters stocked in my bar. So the next step was to make my own. For my first try, I used liqueur de gentiane, cardamom, cranberries and others spirits to get a mixture that's been sitting in my cabinet for a few months now. It was waiting for its own label, that I only finished today.
Ces derniers mois, j'ai dépassé la limite psychologique des dix bitters dans mon bar. L'étape suivante était de faire ma propre recette. Pour mon premier essai, j'ai pris de la liqueur de gentiane, de la cardamome, des cranberries et divers autre spritueux pour composer un mélange qui patientait dans une armoire depuis quelques mois en attente de son étiquette, achevée aujourd'hui.
So here they are : the Red Bitters! Et voilà le Red Bitters !

Superhero Mai-Tais : Idol of Millions

Here's another superhero variation of the Mai Tai (read previous posts of the series here, there and there).
Voici une nouvelle variante super-héroïque du Mai Tai (précédents épisodes ici, là et là).

As Mai Tai variations are dedicated to larger-than-life, superlative characters, this time, it's an homage to the blue-eyed Thing, the member of the Fantastic Four who modestly calls himself : the Idol of Millions.
For Mr Benjamin J. Grimm, I had the idea of a more orange-y Mai Tai.
Comme ces déclinaisons du Mai Tai sont dédiées à des personnages ayant un certain goût pour la démesure, cette fois, l'hommage s'adresse à la Chose aux yeux bleus, le membre des quatre Fantastiques qui se surnomme lui-même : l'idole des foules.
Pour Ben Grimm, j'ai concocté un Mai Tai plus... orange.

1 oz of aged rum (Appleton 12) /3 cl de rhum âgé (Appleton 12)
1 oz of Clement Creole Shrubb /3 cl de shrubb Clement (liqueur de rhum-orange)
1/2 oz of Apricot Brandy /1,5 cl d'abricot Brandy
1/2 oz of orgeat syrup /1,5 cl de sirop d'orgeat
3/4 oz of lime juice /2 cl de jus de citron vert
2 dashes of orange bitters (I opened the bottle of Regan's I recently received)
2 trait d'orange bitters (j'ai étrenné ma bouteille de Regan's)

Yellow color but orange taste
couleur jaune mais goût orange

Shake and serve in a double rocks glass (I didn't take time to crush ice for this one but my glass was pre-chilled and the ice cubes used for shaking gave a more "rocky" look to the drink).
Garnish : lime shell, brandied apricot, pineapple chunk.
Shaker et servir dans un verre double rocks (je n'ai pas pris le temps de piler de la glace mais mon verre était rafraîchi et les glaçons ayant servi à shaker ont donné un air plus "rocailleux" au cocktail)
Déco : moitié de citron vert pressé, un abricot à la liqueur et un morceau d'ananas.

Tasting notes : it's quite good ! I think the orange bitters helps to keep the sweetness in check while the rum, the orange shrubb and the apricot brandy blend very well.
Note de dégustation : très bon ! L'orange bitter contrebalance bien le côté sucré amené par les liqueurs et sirops tandis que les saveurs du rhum, de l'orange et de l'abricot se marient très bien.
